100 injured in Ashuganj mob–police clash

UNB, ASHUGANJ

Mar 29: Police fired teargas and rubber bullets to quell violence as mobs of local people clashed with them at Ashuganj square today (Tuesday), leaving around 100 wounded and disrupting inter-district traffic.

Over 200 vehicles got stranded on both sides in a huge jam as traffic on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway halted for two hours as the rioting took place on the road-intersection, witnesses and officials said.

Fifteen cars, including the one of district JCD President Shamim Khan, were also damaged amid the widespread clash that erupted during a protest demonstration against the shifting of a fuel pant.

Sources said the clash ensued when locals tried to lay a siege to the highway at 11am to protest a government decision to relocate NGL Fractionation Plant from here to Sylhet and police obstructed.

NGL Plant Transfer Control Committee members planned the one-hour Dhaka-Sylhet Highway Siege Programme.

"As troubles spread all around, police fired 30 rubber bullets and teargas on the agitating people to get to grips with the situation. The protesters also pelted the police with brickbats," says a firsthand report.

Among the injured were convener of the committee Isha Khan, Secretary Shajhahan Alam Saju and journalist Arifur Rahman Dipu.

Police brought the situation under control after two hours of raging violence with the help of local BNP activists.

UNO M Khalilur Rahman, Assistant Super of Police M Quamruzzaman were present at the spot.

Police reinforcements have been deployed in the area.

The Committee said that they would announce their next programme through press conference.
